Background
Moldova ranks 59th in 2020’s Peoples under Threat table, maintaining its place from last year’s ranking.
Moldova entered the Peoples under Threat table in 2014. Ethnic Russian protesters in Moldova’s breakaway region of Trans-Dniester have called for annexation by Russia, which has troops stationed there. The Russian authorities are acutely concerned that Moldova will sign an association agreement with the EU later in 2014 – the same process that sparked the Ukraine crisis.
